The Great Mother came to me

I was there in a forest
Kneeling
With my eyes closed
Feeling the earth, the heartbreak
The wet sand that I clinched with my fists
A declaration of war perhaps
But it felt good to the touch.

I lowered my ear to the ground
To listen to the sound of the mighty, invisible, wild river of the night.
Maybe she will come
This is the place she is said to visit
In my anguish I shall await her arrival
Forever may pass but it is her who is said to have the answers I seek.

There in the forest
Away from humanity’s observance
Humanity’s rules
I listened
I heard the birds
And the forest speak
The terror of the night was at hand
The ghosts longing for eternity were restless
And the trees whispered the tale of time.

.. What was that I heard
Footsteps approaching
A dark & beautiful light walked towards me
Words left my stilled breathe
She came

She walked slow and steady
Curious
Godly
Her crown looked heavy

She knelt down on the ground with me
I became afraid of her glory
She was terrifying and she was no wife’s tale
In my fear I thought; All of beauty must be defined by her or for her.

She stared at me in wonder
That I would dare wait
Dare live to see her
The treacherous forest had not dampened my courage
I was determined to meet the lioness of the North and survive.

She rose to her feet, I stayed on the ground, scared

What are you listening for, she asked
My heart beating, I proclaimed ..
I am waiting for you Oh Great Mother, Bearer of the unknown, Molder of mountains, Custodian, The Terror of the mighty oceans, Queen and Great Womb.

I came to ask you what you would do with us
Why are you angry
Why have you taken many
Was this a part of your plan
For rebirth
To redo all things
Have you not seen us in our suffering
Will you relent your anger
For the ones I love have become one with dust and oceans.

I cried with the chaos of my fleeting mortality
And the pain of loss

She looked at me with her piercing fearsome eyes

Her head titled to the side
She was deathly silent
As if the mystery of the universe had to remain with her
She beckoned me to rise up
And violently held my face
With dirt in her hands and fire in her eyes
She said..

Child!
Look up to the skies, and see the evidence you seek in the stars
Behold Time as it truly is
The wonder of worlds that once were
Nothing lasts forever.
I shall give humanity the kindness of weeping
For a world burning
A place shattered
A home that they, you, have abandoned.

.. And the forest burned.
